Periodontal disease is an infection in the gums. It generally begins as an inflammation of the gum tissue and is caused by harmful bacteria in plaque (a sticky film that forms on the teeth). If regular oral hygiene is not maintained, these bacteria cause an infection which damages the supporting structures of the teeth. If left untreated, the infection progresses to an advanced stage, and the gums pull away from the teeth, creating gaps known as periodontal pockets.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition and can lead to loss of teeth and jawbone if not treated in time. Some of the common signs of a periodontal infection are as follows:

  • Tender or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Painful chewing

Treating Periodontal Disease with Scaling and Root Planing
    (Root Surface Debridement)

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment that helps to control the progression of gum disease. First, the teeth, gums and mouth are deeply cleaned using dental instruments to get rid of any tartar deposits. Then, the root surfaces of the teeth are smoothed out to prevent plaque, tartar and bacteria from re-depositing there. An antibiotic rinse may be prescribed after the treatment to prevent further infection. You may feel some sensitivity, pain, tenderness and swelling in the gums for a couple of days after the procedure. We will schedule a follow-up visit to monitor the healing of the periodontal pockets.

Following periodontal treatment, it is crucial to follow a complete and efficient oral care routine to prevent the onset of gum disease. One must brush twice a day and floss once daily to avoid the buildup of plaque and visit our practice regularly for checkups and cleanings.
