If the fear of the dental implant procedure being painful is stopping you from going through with the treatment, let us give you some reassurance. Everyone’s case is unique, but there’s little to no pain while getting dental implants! Even though getting dental implants requires oral surgery, there are certain steps in place to ensure that patients can go through the treatment and the recovery period without discomfort.
When it’s time to get a dental implant, your dentist will apply local anesthesia to numb the area so you don’t experience pain. On top of that, you’ll have the option to get dental sedation like nitrous oxide (laughing case) or oral conscious sedation (which is administered in a pill). Dental sedation can help calm any nerves you may have, and it’ll help make it seem like your surgery has gone by in the blink of an eye. With anesthesia and sedation, your comfort is made a top priority.
Following your dentist’s aftercare instructions is crucial to ensuring you have a smooth, pain-free recovery. After your dental implant surgery, you’ll be prescribed certain medications like antibiotics to manage your recovery. It’s normal to experience a little bit of soreness during this period since that’s when the anesthesia wears off, but you can treat it with over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol. Over time, this soreness will lessen and lessen until you don’t experience it at all anymore. Generally speaking, you shouldn’t be experiencing any discomfort after about two weeks. If you have pain, you should contact your dentist so they can see if something else is causing this.
