Are Dental Sealants 100% Effective at Preventing Cavities?

Are Dental Sealants 100% Effective at Preventing Cavities?

Your back teeth are strong and great at chewing harder foods, but the natural grooves can cause problems. They’re a great home for food particles and all kinds of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. Dental sealants are a simple and effective way to fight cavities! Are they 100% effective?

What Are Dental Sealants?

Before we talk about the effectiveness of dental sealants, what are they exactly? Sealants are thin plastic coatings that smooth the grooves of your back teeth. We first clean and dry the tooth’s surface and then apply a special gel. This gel serves as the “glue” between the tooth and sealant. The sealant is then painted on with a brush and hardened with a special light. You can eat and drink normally right after!

How Effective Are Sealants?

Research shows that dental sealants reduce the risk of molar tooth decay by almost 80%. While it’s not 100%, 80% is still a very significant percentage. You can further reduce your risk with daily brushing and flossing, as well as regular trips to our office for cleanings. We’ll always check your sealants to see if they need to be reapplied.

Who Should Get Sealants?

Because dental sealants work so well, we recommend that kids get them as soon as their molars erupt. This protects their teeth right off the bat and sets them up for great oral health. That being said, people of all ages benefit from sealants.
