How Do Fillings Work?

Having a cavity is no fun. But we hope that you’ll find getting a filling to be pretty quick, easy, and painless. In today’s blog post, we’ll let you know what to expect if you’ve been told you need a filling.

What Is a Filling?

When you experience tooth decay, that’s damage to the surface of your tooth. As the bacteria eats its way through the layers of the tooth, a hole is formed. Before the damage gets too far, we’ll clean the area to remove the decay, and fill the space to preserve the tooth. Here at Jack Vayner, DDS, Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we use tooth-colored fillings. The composite material we use bonds to your natural tooth, strengthening the area and giving your filling a natural look and feel. Additionally, our fillings won’t contract or expand with temperature changes, lessening the chances that your tooth will crack or chip from the filling.

If you have a filling procedure lined up, there’s no need to fret! The experience will start with Novocaine, so that you can be guaranteed to be completely comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. Next up, we’ll clean the area to remove the bacteria that’s been contributing to the damage. From there we’ll place the composite material in the tooth. We use a curing light to harden the filling. Once it’s completely hardened, we shape and buff the area to ensure a natural look and feel! Finally, we polish the area and your tooth is as good as new!
