What Is Periodontal Disease?

What Is Periodontal Disease?

You may not be familiar with periodontal disease, but you might know it by it’s more common name: gum disease. When gum disease is in its earliest stages, it’s referred to as gingivitis. When gum disease has advanced, it’s called periodontitis. We know it might not be the easiest to get all those terms straight, but what you should know is that it needs to be properly treated in order to protect your dental health.

To help you protect your smile, here are some of the basics you should know about periodontal disease:

Causes of Periodontal Disease

You know how bacteria left on your teeth can lead to cavities? Well when bad bacteria builds up around your gum line in the form of plaque and tartar, it can cause gum disease. People who practice poor oral hygiene or who smoke are at a higher risk of developing health issues with their gums. Aside from those two categories, certain diseases, medications, and genetics can also contribute to periodontal disease.

Signs of Periodontal Disease

While the signs of periodontal disease can vary from patient to patient, there are some common symptoms you can keep an eye out for. Here are some of the warning signs:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose permanent teeth

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s in your best interest to book an appointment with a dental professional. The sooner gum disease is caught, the sooner you can begin treatment!
