Tooth decay or cavities may be a common problem, especially in children, but there are certain things you can do as a parent to prevent it from happening. Here are some simple steps to incorporate into your daily life to significantly decrease the chance of your kid developing a cavity.
While at home, lead by example by showing your child how easy and important it is for them to brush twice a day. You should help your little ones create their own routine by reminding them anytime they forget and not letting them go to bed without brushing. You can also set up a timer or a fun song that marks how long they should be brushing their teeth (about two minutes in total).
As a parent, there are plenty of things you have to juggle on your child’s schedule from afterschool activities to playdates to doctors’ appointments. Make sure that you don’t forget to bring your child to the dentist’s office at least twice a year for their routine teeth cleaning and dental checkup. These visits are crucial for keeping cavities at bay and keeping an eye on any potential problem areas.
Chances are if you let your child decide what they wanted to snack on all the time, they would always go for the chips, candy, and soda. Addictive, sugary snacks are hard to resist even for adults, but they can also increase the chance of developing tooth decay. To help prevent cavities, limit your child’s sugar intake, and make sure there are plenty of healthier options around the house like fruit, veggie sticks, and string cheese.
