With its promises of whitening teeth quickly and naturally, it’s no wonder that charcoal toothpaste is rapidly gaining popularity. But is this trendy toothpaste actually as safe for your teeth as people claim it is?
Charcoal toothpaste is toothpaste that contains activated charcoal, which is a natural, fine black powder that supposedly carries many health benefits. Although many people have noted that it can help whiten your teeth over time, it cannot combat deeper-set stains.
Aside from being black in color (and staining your teeth black temporarily!), charcoal toothpaste is abrasive on your teeth. Activated charcoal might be a natural ingredient, but it doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the best for your teeth. If you use charcoal toothpaste consistently twice a day, you are actually doing more to damage your enamel over time than to strengthen it. Ironically, this means that your teeth are even more susceptible to staining than without it!
Damaged enamel also means that you are more likely to develop cavities in decay, since the strong, protective layer of your teeth is now weakened.
If you’re looking for a brighter smile without the long-term enamel erosion, look for a toothpaste with the ADA (American Dental Association) seal on the label. Toothpastes that contain fluoride and baking soda are great to keep your enamel strong and your teeth white and clean. The best part is, you won’t be at any risk of developing damage over time!
